Stems erect to ascending , decumbent at the base and there sometimes divided , unbranched or sparsely branched , sometimes rooting at the nodes , weak , pubescent . Leaves alternate to spirally arranged , 2-10 × 1 . 5-5 cm , ovate to elliptic-lanceolate , apex acute , margins ciliate , base tapering into a short petiole forming a sheath around the stem , pilose-puberulose . Inflorescences terminal , of cymes in a lax panicle , not enclosed in spathaceous bracts ; bract herbaceous . Flowers pale blue to lilac to white , ± 1 cm wide , pedicellate , sparsely pubescent , 7-9 mm and recurved in fruit ; sepals 3 , 2-3 mm ; petals 3 , lilac to white ; stamens 6 ; ovary covered with glandular hairs .
