Cyperus arenarius Retz.

This species is native to Arabian Peninsula, extending to S Iran, eastwards to Indo-China. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 24 species of Cyperus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Evergreen , perennial herb ; up to 6-25(-30) cm tall with long creeping rhizomes and thin , not tomentose root , deep in sand . Stems (clums) almost terete , glabrous . Leaves ± equaling the culms ; leaf sheaths rigid , distictly brownish veined , disintegrating into fibres with age , mouth margin straight ; leaf blade 1 mm wide , stiff , linear , greyish green , semi-circular in transverse section , slightly scabrid on the margins , apex flat , blunt or acute . Inflorescences capitate with 5 to more than 20 spikelets ; spikelets dark brown , ovoid , with scarious margins , compressed ; glumes 14-24 , pale brown , concave , ovate , margins scarious . Fruit nutlet , brown or dark brown , obovoid , plano-convex , compressed , smooth , glossy . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
