Slender to very robust tussocky perennial herb ; up to 10-40(-50) cm long with woolly roots , usually with sand adhering . Stems (culms) almost terete , glabrous . Leaves many , ± equaling the culms , often curving , sometimes rigid with involute margins ; leaf sheaths rather thin , hard , brownish or reddish , turns fibrous with age ; leaf blade 1-2 mm wide , linear , often rather thick , slightly scabrid on the margins , apex acute , sometimes folded as dry . Inflorescences simple or spherical clusters of generally pale spikelets ; spikelets 10–50-flowered , lanceolate , greyish green to greyish brown , ovoid , compressed or subterete ; glumes pale brown , concave , ovate , many-nerved , margins scarious . Fruits nutlet , dark brown to black , obovoid , surface finely reticulate , obscurely triangular , minutely papillose . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
