Stems (culms) crowded , bases swollen and fused into a horizontal rhizome , grey-green , tufted , terete to upper part trigonous , smooth . Leaves grey-green , up to nearly equalling stems ; leaf sheath hard , brown to greyish brown , loose ; leaf blade linear , canaliculate or flat , margins inrolled , scabrid on margins , apex acute to acuminate . Inflorescences a solitary usually globose head of 5–50 spikelets , whitish or yellowish brown ; spikelets to 20 per head , crowded , lanceolate , compressed ; glumes pale grey-green to white , tightly distichous , elliptic-lanceolate , acuminate , slightly keeled . Fruit nutlet , 1 . 3–2 × 1–1 . 3 mm , dark brown to black , shiny , obovoid , triangular , smooth , obscurely papillose . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
