Medium sized , closely tufted annual herb , up to 40 cm tall ; glabrous ; with shallow root system . Stems (culms) thin , erect , hollow , ridged , terete or angular . Leaves few , straw-colored , reduced to scarious scales at the base of stem and to tubular sheaths ; leaf sheath reddish or purple at base , greenish grey above , ending in a short triangular acute lobe with hyaline margin . Inflorescence a single terminal spikelet ; spikelets ovoid , 20–50-flowered ; glumes spirally arranged , imbricate , reddish brown , brown and rounded at apex , margin slightly laciniate . Fruits nutlet blackish purple , obovoid , smooth and shiny ; appandage pale grey , minute and conical . (Flora of Oman ; vol . 4) .
