Annual or short-lived perennial , erect or spreading ; up to 75cm but usually much shorter . Leaves linera , flat or folded . Inflorescence variable , from dense terminal clusters to spread out along the stem . Spikelet/Floret with unequal glumes ; each floret with three bristle-like appendages (awns) , one up to 2 . 5cm in length , the other two similar or shorter .
