Tufted perennial up to 70 cm high , the culms often slightly swollen at the base ; leaf-blades lanceolate , subamplexicaul , densely grey-tomentose . Inflorescence of 4-5 racemes , these borne on an elongated central axis up to 13 cm long ; racemes 6-12 cm long , the spikelets mostly in pairs (occasionally in groups of 3 at the base of the racemes) on a triquetrous rhachis , those of a pair distinctly and unequally pedicellate . Spikelets elliptic . Fruit laneolate in outline , deep violet-brown .
