Annual up to 75 cm high ; leaf blades flat . Panicle lanceolate to narrowly elliptic in outline , the lowermost branches whorled and usually pilose in the axils with a few loose long hairs . Spikelets narrowly oblong , 4- to 12-flowered , shedding their florets from below upwards , the palea falling with or soon after the lemma , the rhachilla tough ; glumes very unequal ; palea keels scrabridulous . Fruit Caryopsis ellipsoid , slightly laterally compressed .
