Submerged aquatic herb forming dense tangled mats ; up to 50 cm long ; rhizome thin , branching freely . Leaves 1–3 per node , ternate , opposite or alternate , sessile , greenish brown , subterete or linear , margins entire , leaf base sheathing . Flowers almost consistently 1 male and a cluster of female together at each pseudowhorl or distally sometimes male alone . Male Flowers with a single stamen . Female Flowers with a translucent tubular perianth . Fruit ovoid , beaked , muricate on the dorsal and ventral edges .
