A tall aquatic herb up to 12 ft high . Leaves very long narrow . Inflorescences male and female inflorecences interrupted by 1-3 cm naked space . Fruit narrowly ovoid , acuminate , with purple streaks . Sterile flowers numerous , scattered irregularly throughout the spike , carpodiun (gynoecium) clavate , purplish-streaked , tipped with a rudimentary style .
