Barleria acanthoides Vahl

This species is native to Egypt, extending to N Tanzania, Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, eastwards to NW India. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 8 species of Barleria found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Shrub or subshrub ; up to 30 cm . Stems sparsely to much branched , spiny , densely pubescent with spreading hairs . Leaves opposite , 8–30 × 8–10 mm , narrow ovate to obovate , apex mucronate with a long spine , base tapering into a short petiole 2–3 mm , margins entire , densely whitish pubescent with ± spreading hairs ; leaves on axillary shoots transformed to spines (axillary spines) with up to 10 mm apical spine and 7–8 mm lateral spines . Inflorescences in axillary congested scorpioid racemes ; bracteoles spiny . Flowers white , nocturnal ; calyx scarious , 4-lobed , outer lobes broadly ovate , up to 20 × 15 mm , with apical spine , veins distinct ; inner lobes 10–12 mm , without apical spine ; corolla 5-lobed , tube cylindrical , 75–80 mm , lobes ± 20 mm across ; stamens 2 fertile . Fruit capsule , up to 11 mm , shortly beaked , glabrous , 4-seeded . Seeds 3-4 mm in diameter , ovoid , silky hairy . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
