Dense low growing bush or shrublet ; up to 25-50 cm high , with prominent spines . Stems branched , grey-white , ± glabrous to sparsely pubescent with spreading hairs . Leaves opposite , 8–15 × 4–6 mm , grey-green , obovate to oblanceolate , apex mucronate with a spine , base tapering into a short petiole 1–3 mm , margins entire , glabrous to white pubescent ; axillary spines 4 in each leaf axil , up to 10 mm , on a short common stalk (spines forming from lower axillary bud) . Inflorescences 1–2 , terminal on lateral branches ; bracts lanceolate to oblanceolate ; bracteoles spiny . Flowers bright orange ; calyx grey-green , 4-lobed , 10–15 mm , outer lobes similar , mucronate , glabrous or pubescent ; corolla bright orange , tubular , 2-lipped , with 4 lobes in the upper lip , one lower lobe ; lobes 6–7 mm ; stamens 2 fertile . Fruit capsule , ± 9 mm , ovoid , beaked , glabrous to pubescent , 2-seeded . Seeds with hygroscopic hairs . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
