Spiny subshrub ; up to 40 cm tall , forming cushions . Stems much-branched from base , grey-brown , finely pubescent with spreading or erect hairs . Leaves opposite , 11–25 × 8–15 mm , bright green , suborbicular or broadly oblong to broadly ovate , apex rounded with a spinose mucro , base tapering into a short petiole 1–3 mm long , margins entire , glabrous to sparsely white pubescent along the margins and main veins and scattered orange-brown glands towards the base ; axillary spines 4-armed from a common stalk ; spines 5–35 mm . Inflorescences solitary in the axils of bracts , subtended by 2 bracteoles , those at the base sometimes subtended by a sessile or short-stalked 1–4-armed spine ; bracts similar to leaves , triangular ovate to oblong-ovate or orbicular ; bracteoles inconspicuous , ovate , spinescent or reduced to a short spinule .
