Annual or perennial herb ; up to 25 cm high , with a woody rootstock , crisped pubescent . Stems erect to decumbent , branched from the base . Leaves opposite , 15–40 × 7–11 mm , broadly lanceolate to elliptic , apex acute to obtuse , base tapering into a short petiole ± 10 mm , margins entire , pubescent . Inflorescences in short axillary and terminal congested spike-like ; bracts 5–12 mm , suborbicular to broadly ovate , sessile , margins lanate . Flowers reddish-purple with purple markings on lower lip ; calyx 5-lobed , lobes ± 2 mm , narrow triangular , green , densely pubescent ; corolla 2-lipped , reddish-purple with purple markings on lower lip , ± 10 mm ; tube ± 6 mm ; upper lip ± 5 mm ; lower lip ± 5 mm ; stamens 2 ; anthers displaced , the lower with a basal appendage .
