Annual or perennial herb ; up to 25 cm high , with a woody rootstock . Stems mostly procumbent or ascending , grey-white , white-tomentose . Leaves opposite , 32–60 × 8–28 mm , narrow obovate to oblanceolat , apex obtuse or emarginate , base tapering into the petiole to 30 mm long , margins irregularly crenulate , grey-green beneath . Inflorescences in spiny axillary spikes ; bracts overlapping , each supporting a sessile or subsessile flower 5–10 mm , bracts broadly ovate to ovate with a spiny acuminate tip ; branched spines representing sterile inflorescences . Flowers blue to purple or white ; calyx deeply divided into 2 lobes , both enlarging in fruit ; upper lobe 6–9 mm , 3-veined ; lower 5–6 mm , 2-veined ; corolla blue to purple or white 6–8 mm ; tube short , limb 3–5 mm across .
