Rostellularia diffusa (Willd.) Nees

This species is native to Eritrea, extending to Ethiopia, S Arabian Peninsula, Indian Subcontinent, eastwards to S China, Indo-China and Taiwan. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is one species of Rostellularia occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Spreading , woody perennial herb ; up to 15-30 cm high . Stems prostrate or erect , weak , lateral branches decumbent , often reddish . Leaves opposite , 5–11 × 5–12 mm , dark green tinged red , orbicular to broadly ovate , apex acute , base rounded , margins entire to minutely crenulate ; petiole 1–2 mm . Inflorescences in terminal spikes on side branches ; bracts and bracteoles 2 , ± 3 mm , ovate with scarious margins , overlapping . Flowers small , c . 6-8 mm long , white to pinkish with purple markings ; calyx ± 4 mm , 4-lobed , green with scarious margins , ciliate ; corolla 2-lipped , white to pinkish with purple markings , lower lip ± 3 mm , with 3 teeth at the apex , upper lip ± 3 mm ; stamens 2 ; anthers displaced , the lower with a basal appendage ; ovary nearly glabrous ; style thinly hairy , branches 2 , subequal , minute . In Omani studies: Miller & Morris (1988) wrote that: "This small plant is toxic to goats, and occasionally also to young or sickly calves, sometimes with fatal results". (Ref. Plants of Dhofar).
