Ruellia discifolia Oliv.

This species is native to E & S Ethiopia, extending to N Kenya and S Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Ruellia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect or straggling shrubby herb or small shrub ; up to 1 m tall . Stems and young branches white-lanate with stellate hairs . Leaves 18–80(–100) × 10–60(–85) mm , ovate to ovate-orbicular , apex acute , base rounded to attenuate to cordate , margins entire or irregularly crenulate , dark green or grey-green above , grey-green beneath , stellate and ± simple hairy ; petiole up to 60 mm . Inflorescences solitary or 2 , in the upper axils of leaves ; pedicels 2–25(–35) mm long ; bracteoles foliaceous , enlarging in fruit . Flowers white or cream , tubular , short-lived , nocturnal , opening at dusk and falling by midday the next day ; calyx 12–25 mm , deeply 5-lobed with lanceolate lobes , stellate hairy ; corolla white or cream , tubular , tube 55–70 mm , expanded and lobed above into 5 lobes , 25–40 mm across ; lobes ± 10 mm , rounded ; stamens 4 ; anthers parallel ; ovary densely pubescent .
