An erect or sprawling perennial herb ; up to 60-80 cm tall , the whole plant may be tinged red . Stems erect to decumbent , often woody at the base , 4-angled or ridged , glabrous to tomentose . Leaves opposite , 1 . 5–6 x 1–5 cm , variable in shape from ovate to elliptic to ovate-lanceolate , acuminate to apiculate or acute to rounded , margin entire , glabrous to densely tomentose ; petiole up to 2 cm . Inflorescences on erect spikes , up to 30 cm , bristly at the top , drooping lower down ; bracts spinous , persistent . Flowers small , green , often deflexed ; perianth segments 5 , 3–7 mm , lanceolate with a distinct midrib and 2 lateral nerves . Fruit capsule , 1–3 mm , ovoid , sharp-pointed , orange to reddish purple or straw-brown , when mature prickly bracts attach to passing animals . Seeds oblong-ovoid , smooth , brown . (Ref .
