Alternanthera pungens Kunth

This species is native to Mexico, extending to Tropical America; introduced and naturalised worldwide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Alternanthera found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Prostrate perennial herb ; up to 20 cm high , forming mats along the ground with a small woody rootstock . Stems prostrate to ascending , rooting at the lower nodes , striate , villous . Leaves opposite or subopposite , 15–40 x 5–15 mm , broadly ovate to rhomboid-ovate , margin entire , purplish . Inflorescences sessile , borne in the leaf axils ; bracts 4–5 mm , membranous , pilose , with an excurrent midrib . Flowers inconspicuous ; perianth of 5 unequal segments , the outer 2 longer (± 5 mm) than the inner (± 3 mm) , mucronate with a spiny mucro ; staminodes shorter than the stamens . Fruit capsule , c . 2 mm in diameter , globose , rounded or retuse above . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
