Amaranthus blitum subsp. oleraceus (L.) Costea

This subspecies is native to Paraguay, extending to S Brazil and NE Argentina; introduced and naturalised worldwide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Amaranthus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect , annual herb ; up to 60 cm long . Stems slender to stout , simple or branched , ± angular , green to reddish or yellow , glabrous . Leaves glabrous , petiolate ; leaf blade ovate to rhombic-ovate , cuneate , apex broad distinctly emarginate , mucronulate . Inflorescences in slender to stout terminal and axillary spikes . Flowers green . Fruit capsule , subrotund to shortly pyriform , compressed , exceeding the perianth , smooth , indehiscent or rupturing irregularly at maturity . Seeds round , compressed , dark brown to black . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
