Amaranthus hybridus L.

This species is native to S Ontario, extending to W South America; introduced and naturalised worldwide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Amaranthus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual herb ; up to 60 cm tall , frequently reddish tinged throughout . Stems erect to ascending , branching from the base , angular . Leaves alternate , 3–20 x 1 . 5–8 cm , broadly lanceolate to rhomboid to ovate , glabrous to thinly pilose . Inflorescences male and female flowers intermixed , in terminal and axillary spikes ; spikes branched at the top , usually unbranched below ; bracts and bract- eoles ovate , aristate . Flowers unisexual ; female perianth 5 , 1–3 mm , oblong , aristate , smaller than the bracteoles . Fruit capsule , 2–3 mm , subglobose , smooth or wrinkled below neck , dehiscent . (Ref .
