Amaranthus sparganiocephalus Thell.

This species is native to NE Tropical Africa, extending to N Tanzania and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Amaranthus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 30 cm high . Stems erect , usually rather stout , simple or branched below the middle , woody , glabrous throughout . Leaves alternate , 15–30 x 7–18 mm , ovate to elliptic , apex obtuse ; petioles 25–30 mm . Inflorescences in axillary clusters , male and female flowers intermixed ; bracts and bracteoles ovate to oblong- ovate . Flowers unisexual ; female flowers: perianth 3 , ± 1 mm , oblong-obovate , with a pointed tip . Fruit capsule , ± 4 mm , woody , ovoid , ridged longitudinally , dehiscent , arranged in a stellate cluster in the axils of leaves . Seeds 1 . 25–1 . 5 mm , ellipsoid , slightly compressed , black , shining , very feebly reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
