Erect annual herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect to ascending , rather slender to stout , usually branched , angular . Leaves alternate , 1 . 5–5×0 . 5–3 cm , ovate to rhomboid-ovate , apex obtuse or retuse , base tapering into a short or long petiole up to ± 8 . 5 cm long , glabrous , or thinly and shortly pilose on the inferior surface . Inflorescences in axillary clusters , the lower spikes entirely female , the upper spikes with female flowers below and the male flowers at the top , rarely intermixed ; bracts ovate , membranous , aristate . Flowers unisexual , green ; perianth 5 , 1–2 mm , narrow-oblong , with a white membranous margin , midrib green and produced into a short mucro ; stigmas 3 , flexuose or reflexed , ± 0 . 75–1 mm long . Fruit capsule , ± 1 . 5 mm , subglobose , with an inflat- ed beak , wrinkled , dehiscent . Seeds 1–1 . 25 mm , compressed , black , shining , faintly reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
