Amaranthus viridis L.

This species is native to SE Mexico, extending to Tropical America; introduced and naturalised worldwide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 6 species of Amaranthus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or short-lived perennial herb ; up to 50 cm tall . Stems erect to ascending , rather slender , sparingly to considerably branched , angular , reddish-green , striate . Leaves alternate , 2–7×2–5 cm , ovate , apex acute , obtuse or retuse , margins occasionally sinuate , base tapering into a short or long petiole , glabrous . Inflorescence unisexual , in slender axillary or terminal spikes narrowing at the top ; bracts membranous . Flowers unisexual , green ; perianth 3(–4) , 1–2 mm , narrow-oblong , with a white membranous margin and a green midrib , produced into a short mucro . Fruit capsule , ± 1 mm , subglobose , wrinkled , rupturing irregularly at maturity , very strongly rugose throughout . Seeds round , slightly compressed , dark brown to black , ± shining , reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
