Annual herb ; up to 30-50 cm high , often becoming stiff and rather woody at the base , densely villous . Stems erect , branched from the base . Leaves alternate , sessile , 5–15 mm , linear , white-villous . Flowers male and female flowers mixed in axillary clusters on leafy spikes . Flowers yellowish-green ; perianth membranous , each perianth segment developing a spine at the apex in fruit , villous at the base ; stamens 5 . Seeds 1 mm in diameter , discoid , greyish , smooth .
