Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima (L.) Thell.

This subspecies is native to Azores, W Europe, extending to Mediterranean and India; introduced and cultivated world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Beta occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 80 cm high , with non-swollen root . Stems erect , ridged , green or reddish . Leaves 2–10 x 1–5 cm , somewhat succulent , glabrous ; basal leaves in a rosette , ovate to ovate-cordate ; cauline leaves ovate-deltoid , apex acute to apiculate , margins entire , sinuate ; petioles 5–15 mm . Inflorescences in interrupted , leafy spikes , in clusters of 1-3 , usually branched . Flowers small , green , urn-shaped ; perianth segments 5 , fused at the base , fleshy , indurate in fruit ; stamens 5 , placed at the rim of a perigynous disc ; ovary fused to the receptacle and base of perianth . Fruit globose , fleshy or indurate . Seeds black , glossy , reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
