Celosia argentea L.

This species is native to Tropical Africa. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Celosia found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual herb ; up to 1 m tall , glabrous throughout . Stems erect to ascending , simple or much branched , sulcate , ridged . Leaves alternate , 2–15×1–3 cm , lanceolate to lanceolate-oblong , acute tip , base tapering into a short petiole . Inflorescences a dense , many-flowered , terminal spike , 2-20 x 1 . 5-2 cm . Flowers tiny , silvery-pink ; perianth 6–10 mm , elliptic with 2–4 lateral nerves , and with wide hyaline margins ; stamens 5 , filaments fused below to form a staminal sheath . Fruit capsule , 3–4 mm , subglobose . Seeds c . 1 . 25–1 . 5 mm in diameter , lenticular , black , shiny , faintly reticulate . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
