Shrub ; up to 60 cm tall , forming rounded hummocks up to 1 . 5 m in diameter . Stems erect to ascending , intricate ; young stems much-branched , ± straight ; old stems with brownish bark . Leaves ± 1 mm , obovate , scarious on the margins . Inflorescences in clusters of 2–3 on short lateral and terminal branches , forming cone-like spikes . Flowers bisexual ; perianth segments 3 , broadly oblong , united below , incurved at the tips , scarious ; stamen 1 . Fruit ± 1 mm in diameter , compressed-ovoid . Seeds compressed-ovoid , brown .
