Erect annual or perennial herb ; up to 30(-90) cm tall , covered with small hairs . Stems erect to straggling , branched , 4- angled or terete , swollen at the nodes . Leaves opposite , variable in size and shape , 2–12 x 1–6 cm , ovate to ovate-elliptic to lanceolate , subglabrous to sericeous , acute tip , entire margins ; petioles up to 2 cm long . Inflorescences woolly clusters on erect terminal spikes with protruding white or pink/red hooked bracts ; bracts persistent , deflexed after fruit fall . Flowers bisexual , greyish-white ; perianth 4–5 , 3-nerved , lanate ; style 1-2(-3) mm . Fruit capsule , 2–3 mm , ovoid , shed with the flowers as a very sticky burr , 1-seeded . (Ref .
