Spinacia oleracea L.

This species is native to Iran, extending to Central Asia and W Pakistan; introduced and cultivated world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Spinacia occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual or biennial herb ; up to 15(-40) cm high , glabrous . Stems erect , sparingly branched , leafy . Leaves alternate , simple ; basal leaves c . 12 x 8 cm , rosette , deltoid-hastate , acute apex , entire or dentate margins , long-petiolate ; upper leaves much smaller , lanceolate or narrowly hastate , the uppermost bract-like . Inflorescences inconspicuous , 80-150 cm high , branching , angular-ribbed , bearing small oblong leaves . Flowers dioicous , yellow-green , 3–4 mm in diameter . Male flowers in panicles ; perianth segments 4(-5) , c . 1 . 5 mm long , oblong-ovate , obtuse ; filaments 4(-5) , c . 2 . 5 mm ; anthers c . 1 mm . Female flowers in numerous axillary clusters of 5-8 ; floral bracts with or without a dorsal spine ; stigmas 1-3 . 5 mm . Fruit c . 3 mm in diameter , not fused with others of the cluster . (Ref . Miller & Cope ; 1996) .
