Succulent annual herb or low shrub ; up to 20-50(-100) cm tall , often woody-based , glabrous . Stems erect to decumbent , much-branched , fleshy , strew-yellow to green , glaucous . Leaves alternate , 10–20 mm , sessile , dense on the vegetative branches , terete to cylindrical or linear , acute tip , fleshy and succulent , sometimes flattened above . Inflorescences clustered in long , leafy spikes ; bracts deltoid with scarious margins , c . 1 mm . Flowers bisexual and female (the bisexual larger) ; perianth 5-lobed , c . 3mm , green and fleshy ; stamens 5 , female flowers with small staminodes ; ovary adnate to the perianth . Fruit c . 1 mm in diameter , thin-walled , immersed in the spongy receptacle . Seeds 1 mm in diameter , reticulate , not strongly compressed , black , glossy . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
