Suaeda monoica Forssk. ex J.F. Gmel.

This species is native to Syria, extending to S Africa, Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, eastwards to India and Sri Lanka. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 4 species of Suaeda found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Monoecious . Perennial shrub ; up to 0 . 8-2(-4) m tall , often with a thick trunk . Stems erect to decumbent , much-branched , green , leafy , glabrous . Leaves alternate , 10–20(–30) mm , sessile , terete to linear , obtuse to subacute , fleshy , flattened on both sides . Inflorescences clustered in long axillary , leafy spikes ; bracts deltoid , c . 1 mm , with scarious margins . Flowers unisexual . Male flowers c . 2 . 75 mm in diameter , developing first , with 5 stamens and a rudimentary ovary , the perianth segments fused in the basal 1/3 ; stamens 1 . 75-2 mm ; anthers c . 1 mm , oblong . Female flowers much smaller , with perianth segments fused to the apex and with minute staminodes ; ovary ovoid ; stigmas 3-4 , 1-1 . 25 mm . Fruit 1 . 5-2 mm , tightly enclosed within the membranous perianth . Seeds 1 . 5-1 . 75 mm in diameter , vertical , compressed , black , glossy . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 1) .
