Anethum graveolens L.

This species is native to N Africa, extending to Chad, Iran and Arabian Peninsula; introduced and cultivated elsewhere. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Anethum occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual herb ; up to 0 . 2-1 m tall , with a pleasant aromatic odour recalling parsley . Stems sparingly to considerably branched , wiry , terete , finely striate , glabrous . Leaves petiolate , sheathing , 3- or 4(–5)-pinnate into setaceous segments ; lower leaves deltoid to oblong lanceolate in outline , to ± 15 cm long ; upper shorter and deltoid-ovate , segments 2–25 × 0 . 2–0 . 5 mm , those of upper leaves longest . Inflorescences umbels , pedunculate , numerous , on mostly (1 . 8-)5-22 cm . Flowers small , ± 2 mm in diameter , yellow ; sepals obsolete ; petals yellow , glabrous , c . 0 . 8 mm long ; styles strongly deflexed . Fruit schizocarps , c . 3–5 x 2–3 mm , elliptic-oblong , strongly dorsally compressed . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
