Desmidorchis penicillata (Deflers) Plowes

This species is native to NE Tropical Africa, SW & S Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 9 species of Desmidorchis found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Clump-forming succulent perennial herb ; up to 1 m tall . Stems branching from base , irregularly branched above , thick , grey-green , leafless , ± 4 cm in diameter , with 4 edges plate-like compressed like wings , irregularly toothed ; old stems recurved . Leaves absent . Inflorescences at the end of the stems , with up to 15 flowers in umbels ; pedicels up to 10 mm . Flowers yellow-green with dark spots , small , with a faint unpleasant smell ; corolla rotate , greenish-yellow with the inner surface of lobes papillose ; papillae green to purplish , sometimes with purple spots , tips of lobes with purple cilia ; corona green or reddish-brown ; outer surface glabrous , inner surface pubescent , hairs whitish ; outer lobes bifid , forming 2 short erect teeth ; inner lobes with short lobes just touching the anthers . Fruit follicles , 6−8 cm , erect , paired , ovoid , acute , glabrous . Seeds dark brown , with a tuft of long white hairs at one end . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
