Clump-forming succulent perennial herb ; up to 1 . 5 m tall , forming large clumps . Stems sparsely branched , conspicuously 4-angled , rib margins dentate , the angles thin and flattened , appearing H-shaped in cross-section , grey-green . Leaves ovate . Inflorescences in apical umbellate of many flowers , 5–10 cm across ; pedicels ± 4 . 5 cm . Flowers dark brown to black-purple ; calyx 5-lobed almost to base , lobes narrowly triangular ; corolla dark brown to black-purple , not fleshy , 20–30 mm across , rotate , 5-lobed to half the length , strongly rugulose , glabrous to densely pubescent ; lobes spreading , ovate , acute ; corona in 2 series: outer corona lobes dark purple , erect , bifid to the base with 2 narrow segments , pubescent ; inner lobes incumbent over the staminal column ; pollinia solitary in each anther locule , ascending .
