Acanthospermum hispidum DC.

This species is native to S. America; widespread and naturalised in tropical and subtropical regions. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one known species of Acanthospermum occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb , up to 40 cm , hispid in all parts . Stems erect , branching regularly and dichotomously , slender , leafy , densely covered with stiff , sometimes sticky hairs . Leaves opposite , 25–35 × 8–12 mm , oblong to obovate , apex acute to obtuse , base cuneate , margins ± entire to irregularly dentate , gland-dotted ; petiole absent or short . Inflorescences solitary , sessile , axillary . Flowers pale yellow , ray flowers female , ray lamina ± 1 mm long ; disc flowers functionally male , tubular . Fruit achenes , 4–5 mm (without spines) , laterally compressed , obtriangular in outline with 2 apical divergent spines 3–4 mm long , and many smaller lateral hooked spinules , green , becoming tawny when mature .
