Cichorium intybus L.

This species is native to Europe, N Africa, W and C Asia; introduced world wide. (Ref. Flora of Oman; vol.3). There is only one species of Cichorium occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A clump-forming perennial herb ; up to 1 m high or more , with white latex and a long stout taproot . Stems erect , branched , striate , densely hispid-setose to glabrescent . Leaves basal leaves over 10 cm long , rosette , obovate to spathulate , rounded to acute , entire to runcinate , hispid or pilose to glabrescent ; cauline leaves similar but increasingly smaller towards stem apex . Inflorescences solitary and terminal on apically thickened stalks or 2–4 sessile in axillary clusters . Flowers bright blue . Fruit achenes , stout , 2-3 mm long , somewhat 5-angled . Seeds pappus , several-seriate of numerous persistent short scales . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

Traditionally, the seeds are used as a treatment for various ailments including liver disorders, diabetes and malaria. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).
