A conspicuous perennial herb ; up to 2 m in height . Stems erect , branched , rigid , leafy , brownish purple , glandular-hairy . Leaves to more than 20 cm long , concentrated in a basal rosette , bipinnatisect , grey-green , with white midribs , deeply toothed margins and white spines 10-25 mm long . Inflorescences solitary at the end of the stem , large , round head , with radiating spines of different lengths . Flowers white to pale blue corolla and bassally yellow , towards apex bluish-white anther tube , tubular , perfect . Fruits achenes , small , dry with a single seed . (Ref .
