Helianthus annuus L.

This species is native to SW U.S.A. extending southwards to Mexico; introduced and naturalised worldwide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Helianthus occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Small annual herb ; up to 20–120 cm high , with a well-developed taproot . Stems erect , unbranched , hairy . Leaves alternate , in upper part of stem , ovate , to 8 x 3 . 5 cm and scabridulous to the touch , with toothed margins , petiolate . Inflorescences a terminal head (capitulum) , 10-50 cm in diameter , surrounded by three rows of bracts (phyllaries) . Flowers yellow orange ; ray flowers serve to attract pollinators ; disc flowers numerous and are arranged in spiral whorls from the centre of the head , fertile . Fruit achene , up to 15-25 mm , white , brown , black or striped . (Ref . POWO ; 2023) .
