Succulent perennial ; up to 40 cm high , glabrous . Stems erect , sometimes decumbent , thick , green , cylindrical , stout , up to ± 3–4 cm in diameter , jointed ; nodes raised to prominent mounds , becoming less prominent with age , and with 5–7 deeper or purplish green radiating lines . Leaves only on young shoots , up to 3 × 1 cm , often tinged red , small , soon falling leaving white scares , elliptic or linear-lanceolate to linear-spathulate , acute , somewhat fleshy . Inflorescences in solitary heads on long stalks at the end of the stem . Flowers ± 30–60 , bright red , perfect , tubular . Fruit achenes , ± 3 mm long , oblong , with white hair . Seeds pappus , 16–19 mm long , of numerous barbellate , white bristles . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .

In Omani studies: Miller & Morris (1988) wrote that: "Medicinally, this plant had various uses, but the most important of them was its efficacy as a haemostatic [DA: kuta' dam]. The body of the plant was crushed , sometimes after preliminary heating or scorching over a fire to make the juice more easy to extract and then was squeezed, and the expressed juice put on a fresh wound or open cut. Fresh juice was also put in the eye to ivari redness and inflammation and as a remedy for an infected or damaged eye. The juice of the plant also played a major role in the popular game: children out herding would collect some of the juice of this plant and also some juice from the aloe, Aloe dhufarensis, [J: tuf], and let drops from both fall onto the palm of the hand.
