Lactuca orientalis (Boiss.) Boiss.

This species is native to E Mediterranean, extending to Xinjiang and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 5 species of Lactuca found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Spinescent subshrub ; up to ± 60 cm high , with white latex , glabrous or subglabrous . Stems whitish , rigid , intricately and divaricately branched , branched from base . Leaves glaucous green ; basal leaves rosulate , up to 12 × 20 mm , sinuate-dentate to pinnately lobed with triangular , acute , retrorse lobes ; stem leaves increasingly smaller and less incised towards stem apex , with linear , adnately long-decurrent auricles . Inflorescences solitary , on peduncles remaining as spines after the shedding of the capitula , or laterally sessile ; with 4 flowers . Flowers pale yellow . Fruit achenes , pale brown , 7–9 mm long , narrowly ellipsoidal , including a 2–3 mm long , concolorous beak . Seeds pappus , of many barbellate , white , easily caducous bristles 7–8 mm long .
