Annual herb , forming small woolly mats . Stems prostrate or decumbent , much-branched from the base , filiform , leafy . Leaves minute , to 12 × 3 mm , spathulate , rounded , entire . Inflorescences in globose clusters surrounded but not exceeded by the leaves at the end of the branches . Flowers purple ; the outer flowers in several rows , filiform , pistillate ; the inner flowers 5–6 tubular , perfect . Fruit achenes , ± 0 . 5 mm long , obovoid , compressed .
