Notobasis syriaca (L.) Cass.

This species is native to Macaronesia, Mediterranean, extending to Iran, N Oman. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Notobasis occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Erect annual thistly herb ; up to 60 cm (or more) high . Stems rather sparsely branched , sparsely arachnoid-hairy . Leaves spinose , pinnatifid with spine-terminated lobes . Inflorescences solitary or by a few at the end of the branches , the lateral sessile or subsessile , subtended and surrounded by reduced spiny leaves . Flowers purple , tubular , perfect . Fruit achenes , broadly obovoid , slightly compress , glabrous , dark brown . Seeds pappus , 12–15 mm long , caducuous as a unit , of flat white , plumose bristles . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
