A fast growing annual herb ; up to 1 . 5 m tall , puberulous and glandular , with a strong scent that repels inscets . Stems erect , much-branched , puberulous or scabridulous . Leaves opposite , pale green , elliptic to ovate in outline , up to 20 × 10 cm , deeply pinnately to bipinnately dissected with obtuse segments , and soft hairs . Inflorescences in terminal or axillary clusters , radiate . Flowers small , white ; ray flowers 5 , pistillate , ray lamina 0 . 5–1 mm long , roundish ; disk flowers functionally staminate , tubular , 4-lobed , basally enclosed in a receptacular palea . Fruit achenes (of the ray flowers) ± 2 mm long , black , obovoid , compressed , connate to the subtending inner phyllary and to a paleate disk flower on either side .
