Woody based sticky annual herb ; up to 100 cm high , densely pilose and glandular , aromatic . Stems erect , interruptedly winged , pilose with long slender and short glandular hairs . Leaves alternate , up to c . 10 × 3 cm , aromatic , obovate to oblong , coarsely dentate to subpinnatifid , sessile , base auriculate , in the lower portion of the stem often somewhat interuptedly decurrent . Inflorescences in lax leafy corymbs of several to many heads . Flowers lilac ; outer flowers female , filiform , in several rows ; inner flowers perfect , few . Fruit achenes , columnar-cylindric , dark brownish , sparsely pilose of adpressed-ascending hairs , with somewhat prominent ribs . Seeds pappus , of ± a dozen barbellate bristles . (Ref .
