Sclerocarpus africanus Jacq.

This species is native to Africa, W Yemen, extending to Indian Subcontinent. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Sclerocarpus occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A weedy annual herb ; up to 1 m tall , scabrid to hispid in all parts . Stems erect , branched , leafy . Leaves opposite in the basal portion of the stem , alternate higher up , to 1 . 5 × 6 cm , ovate , basally cuneate , petiolate , apically acute , dentate . Inflorescences solitary at the end of branches . Flowers yellow ; ray flowers few , pistillate ; disk flowers perfect , tubular . Fruit achenes , 5–7 mm long , asymmetrically obovoid , black , overtopped by the firmly attached , clasping palaea . Seeds pappus , absent . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
