Sonchus maritimus L.

This species is native to Mediterranean, extending to Central Asia and Pakistan, N Chad. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Sonchus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Perennial herb ; up to 50 cm high , with shoot bearing roots and white latex . Stems erect , leafy , little branched in upper part . Leaves almost ribbon-like to linear-elliptic or - lanceolate , rarely more than 2 cm wide , sinuate-dentate , clasping the stem with roundish auricles . Inflorescences by few at the end of the branches . Flowers numerous , yellow . Fruit achenes , compressed , 2 . 5–3 mm long , elliptisoidal , ribbed and with smooth surface . Seeds pappus , 6–8 mm long , white , of numerous downy and few thicker and longer hairs , easily caducous . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
