Sonchus oleraceus L.

This species is native to Macaronesia, Europe, extending to Mediterranean, Sahara extending eastwards to Arabian Peninsula; introduced and naturalised world wide. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There are 2 species of Sonchus found in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

A coarse erect annual herb , to 1 m tall , with white latex . Stems erect , leafy , green with reddish or purplish tinge , slightly succulent , hollow , simple or sparsely branched in upper part , glaucous . Leaves dull green , mostly lanceolate in outline , coarsely pinnatifid with acute segments and sinuate-dentate , clasping the stem with acute auricles . Inflorescences few to many at the end of the branches . Flowers numerous , yellow . Fruit achenes , compressed , 2 . 5–3 . 5 mm long , light to reddish-brown , cuneate in outline , ribbed and with warty , tuberculate surface . Seeds pappus , 5–8 mm long , white , of numerous downy and few thicker and longer hairs , ± persistent . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
