Tagetes erecta L.

This species is native to Mexico, extending southwards to Guatemala; now widely grown in tropical as well as temperate regions. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Tagetes occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Annual herb ; up to 1 m tall , whole plant aromatic . Stems erect , leafy , branched mainly in upper part , glabrous . Leaves opposite ; the apical alternate , elliptic in outline , pinnatisect with linear-elliptic , entire to dentate segments , glandular , otherwise glabrous . Inforescences solitary , on long peduncles which are thickened near the apex . Flowers golden yellow ; ray flowers 5–8 , pistillate , ray lamina 10–20 mm long ; disk flowers many , perfect , tubular , 10–16 mm long . Fruit achenes , 9–11 mm long , narrowly cylindric , ribbed , black . Seeds pappus , whitish , of 1–2 , up to ± 15 mm long awn-like scales and 3–4 linear , truncate , 4–6 mm long , partly connate scales . (Ref . Flora of Oman ; vol . 3) .
