Berberis holstii Engl.

This species is native to Eritrea, extending to Zambia, and Arabian Peninsula. (Ref. POWO; 2023). There is only one species of Berberis occurs in Oman. (Ref. Oman Botanic Garden).

Spiny , large to medium-sized perennial shrub ; up to 3 m tall , glabrous with dark grey bark . Stem grooved , red-brown to purplish red , glabrous ; young branches with many short shoots subtended by 3–5-fid spines ; spines 1–4 cm long . Leaves alternate , crowded , appearing simple , but with 2 very reduced filiform leaflets at the base , bright orange-red in autumn color , sessile , leathery , rigid , obovate , margin mostly entire at base , distinctly dentate at the apex , glabrous . Inflorescences in clusters of up to 10 individual flowers or short simple or compound racemes . Flowers bright yellow ; pedicel slender ; petals 6 , obovate ; stamens 6 . Fruit berry , fleshy , ovoid to round , red when unripe , black when ripe , 1-4-seeded , with persistent stigma . Seeds 5–7 mm long , 2–3 mm wide , ellipsoid , brown , finely rugulose . (Ref .
